UPDATE
I just thought I would update you and the members of the Lincoln Civic Trust about a project the Trust has helped sponsor and are very much involved in. The Covid restrictions dramatically slowed us down, but we are back to business again and hopefully will have the project completed soon.
The Rotary Club of Lincoln and Anglian Water are heading the Project, with all the legalities now in place (planning, licences, insurance etc.) and Water Aid being the Charity supported.
Briefly, the Frieze is a sculpture designed to commemorate the birth of a new drinking water source for the City of Lincoln, after the tragic typhoid disaster in 1905. The citizens of Lincoln at that time had to fund the massive engineering project, so rightfully the frieze is being brought back to the city which the water source still supplies.
Two storyboards will support the frieze, one telling the failure of the Victorian water supply, typhoid, the aftermath, and the introduction of the new water in 1911. The second board tells how an event, held in Lincoln by Rotary and Anglian Water, for the Centenary of the Water Supply in 2011, to raise enough funds to complete a project by WaterAid in Madagascar in supplying safe piped water for the 1st time and Improving the health to many.
How did this all happen? Back in 2015 Anglian Water was modifying the building where the frieze stood (Elkesley} and suggested to Rotary its rightful place should be in Lincoln and would Rotary like to try to make this happen. As Rotary of Lincoln has its own Centenary in 2022 there was no hesitation, they now had a project and Date to get this done, and it’s looking like this will happen and again with WaterAid becoming the beneficiary.
The photos show the complete Frieze with the storyboard frames in position on each side. It’s of white terracotta needing a little tender loving care and certainly a stonemason, which we have.
NEWSLETTER 100 - JUNE 2021
Dear Members
It has certainly been a challenging year for us All in one way or another and the Trust has kept working behind the scenes on general administration duties and signposting of planning applications etc.
The Executive have been keeping in touch with one another by phone, e-mail and even the Planning Committee have been holding their meetings via e-mail to discuss their observations before they go off to the City of Lincoln Council Planning Department portal.
St Mary’s Guildhall, as some of you may be aware from the Lincolnshire Echo or other media sources is now part of the HSAZ (High Streets – Heritage Action Zone). The project is from the Central Market, which is already part of a planning application for restoration and modernization down High Street to Sibthorp Street which includes the North Range at St Mary’s. At this moment in time, there is urgent repair work and general maintenance going ahead together with some urgent supports being installed for the walls.
Bookings have become somewhat limited throughout the year due to the Pandemic but we have now managed to have our first hall hire, last month, and am subsequently now taking future bookings for events on a limited and Covid secure basis.
Our first member’s event to take place, will be held on Thursday, 23rd September 2021 at the normal time of 7.30pm where Richard Croft will be talking about the ‘Lincoln Local Listing’ of buildings. The following event will be the autobiographer Sharon Connelly on Thursday, 21st October 2021 at the same time. Our visit for the year to Barton on Humber will now be re-arranged for July 2022 when hopefully things will be a lot safer and we will be more used to the way things are being generally run by Local Authority areas and the Country as a whole. It is our intention to hold a social meeting in November at which we will conduct our Annual General Meeting and discuss the future of the Trust going forward.
Please be aware that due to the cost of postage, we will not in the future be sending out mailings unless specifically asked to so. Notification will only be by e-mail. Our website has all the up-to-date information and our Facebook and Twitter pages will also contain the most recent details.
The Trust are always looking for new members to join or for any new ways or ideas on how to move forward in the forthcoming year, so if you know of anybody who is interested in the work of the Trust or for example the Planning process and are keen to be involved then do please contact us via our website, Facebook page or Twitter account.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.
If you require any further information please contact the office.
